What's on this half term

From educational exhibitions to markets, there’s something for everyone to enjoy this autumn. Here are some highlights you won’t want to miss:

1. Steam to Green

When: until 6 September 2026
Where: Newcastle

Head over to the Discovery Museum in Newcastle to discover their new exhibition: ‘Steam to Green: A North East Energy Revolution’. This family-friendly free exhibition shares the story of energy and the climate crisis in the North East from the Industrial Revolution to the pioneering contributions in green technologies of today. 2. Halloween Half-Term Activities at Newcastle Castle

When: 26th October – 3rd November
Where: Newcastle

Join the spooky fun at Newcastle Castle and enjoy a range of free Halloween-themed activities. The castle will be adorned with witches and other Halloween decorations, and there will even be a spooky display to engage with! 

For those who love to get creative, ‘Creepy Crafts’ offers the chance to create a clay monster and decorate a gravestone, which you will be able to then take home or leave in the castle ‘crypt’. 



3. Autumn Market at Edinburgh Zoo

When: 12th – 13th October
Where: Edinburgh

Planning a trip to Edinburgh this half term? Be sure to make a stop at Edinburgh Zoo. The zoo makes a fantastic day out for the whole family, featuring exciting exhibits, over 2,500 incredible animals from around the world, and the famous penguin parade. On 12th-13th October, Lemur Lodge will host the autumn market, showcasing a selection of local artisans and independent traders.  



4. Scottish International Storytelling Festival
When: 18th – 31st October
Where: Edinburgh

One of the largest storytelling festivals in the world, the Scottish International Storytelling Festival is a great opportunity to explore cultures, traditions, and storytelling styles from all around the world, connecting past, present, and future. This year’s theme is ‘Bridges Between’ and it celebrates the festival’s 35th anniversary.

5. The Elmer Adventure
When: 30th October – 3rd November
Where: London

The South Bank Centre will welcome ‘The Elmer Adventure’ – a magical musical adaptation of the beloved Elmer books by David McKee. Celebrate Elmer’s unique patchwork colours at this live show brought to life through puppetry, storytelling and live music by Tall Stories.
