To celebrate Self Care Week (18 – 24 November 2024), which this year focuses on both mind and body, electric train operator, Lumo, is revealing that over a fifth of Brits (22%) would book a return train trip in the name of self-care.

The Newcastle-based operator surveyed over 1,000 Brits to uncover their feelings toward rail travel as a form of self-care. Of those surveyed on their reason for considering a return train trip, 36% stated that they would do so to see a new part of the country, followed by those who would like to take a solo journey to read a book (16%) and to enjoy some alone time and unwind (13%).

Listen to a podcast/favourite music (8%)

Lumo, which operates services on the East Coast line between London and Edinburgh with stops at Newcastle, Morpeth, and Stevenage, also asked where Brits would most like to visit on their self-care trip, with Edinburgh topping the destination list (24%) followed by North Yorkshire (21%), London (18%) and Northumberland (11%) ranking next in the list. The Newcastle to Edinburgh rail route was voted one of the most scenic in the UK*, making it perfect for customers wanting to take in the views from the comfort of their seats.

With solo travel being an increasing trend among young people, it’s no surprise that 23% of Gen Z admitted they would consider this as a chance to enjoy some needed downtime, the highest-ranking age group in the survey. Men were more likely to book a return ticket for themselves (25%) versus (20%) of women surveyed.

Speaking on the new research, Martijn Gilbert, managing director at Lumo commented: “We know how relaxing a train journey can be, offering the chance to switch off and unwind while watching the world pass us by. It’s great to see that the findings of our new research cement this feeling among consumers, with so many Brits considering booking a rail trip for self-care. No matter the reason, it’s really important that everyone takes some time for themselves, and I would highly recommend a scene train journey.

“Lumo trains travel through some of the most beautiful, scenic routes in the UK including the North East coast up to Scotland, so there’s no better way to relax than to sit back and take in the views. Our Lumo seats are super comfy with winged headrests that aid in a relaxing journey and even a nap! Our trains are a sustainable form of travel and are also great value, meaning that a train journey could be cheaper than a visit to the spa!”

Lumo secured a 96% customer satisfaction score earlier this year; leading the rail industry in customers enjoying the journey experience onboard the high-speed services between England and Scotland. Lumo’s trains offer generous legroom and winged headrests, ideal for taking a snooze or simply sitting back to watch the scenery speed by.

Speaking on what to see on a self-care trip, a spokesperson for Destination North East England said: “North East England is a treasure trove of stunning things to see and do, from our tranquil countryside, spellbinding coastlines and our vibrant towns and cities and as you gaze out of the train window, be sure to keep an eye out for the stunning views down NewcastleGateshead's iconic quayside and over our world-famous bridges, glimpse a stunning vista across the medieval Durham streets and UNESCO World Heritage Site Durham Cathedral or be awed by the unforgettable sight of Holy Island sitting peacefully on the horizon as the train passes through the Northumberland coast.”
