Lumo partners with UK sustainability pioneer to drive greener travel

Lumo teams up with Marka to reinforce our commitment to sustainable travel

Published 05 Mar 2025

Demonstrating its commitment to sustainable travel, Newcastle-based train operator Lumo has teamed up with Marka, the UK’s first standardised sustainability rating for the hospitality industry, to reinforce its commitment to environmentally responsible travel.

Through this partnership, Lumo aims to provide customers with greater transparency on its sustainability offering while encouraging the rest of the travel and hospitality industry to adopt greener practices.

The open-access operator’s onboard sustainability initiatives currently include a 100% electric fleet, paperless ticketing, replacing plastic bottles onboard with sustainable alternatives and a 50% plant-based menu.

Marka, which is also based in the North East of England, promotes sustainable practices in hospitality and provides standardised sustainability ratings for the industry, which supports customer’s freedom to choose greener organisations.

Partnering with Marka will help Lumo to address any areas for further innovation and drive a greater conversation around sustainable practice.

As a proud North East business, Lumo is committed to supporting regional partnerships that drive meaningful change. This partnership demonstrates how businesses in the North East can work collectively to create a greener future, while also showcasing the region as a hub for sustainability innovation.

Martijn Gilbert, Managing Director at Lumo, said: “Sustainability is at the heart of everything we do at Lumo. As the UK’s first all-electric rail company, we embrace partnerships that helps to drive even greener travel and enhanced customer experiences. We’re thrilled to be working with together with Marka to ensure we remain a leader in sustainable travel.”

Chiara Wilson, Operational Director at Marka, said: “We're thrilled to be working with Lumo trains to showcase their onboard sustainability to customers. Being able to work with the only train operator based in Newcastle is a huge opportunity to spread the message of cultural, social and environmental sustainability to people of the region and beyond. We're excited to see where the partnership will lead and we are enthusiastic about the positive change we can bring to the sector.”

Lumo’s planet-first approach is embedded in every aspect of its operations. Its eco-friendly office is entirely paper-free and ranks among the top 10% of the most sustainable new non-domestic buildings in the UK. In 2024, Lumo was recognised as ‘Green Innovation Business of the Year’ at the North East Chamber of Commerce Business Awards and also honoured at the Institute of Supply Chain Management’s Supply Chain Awards for its ‘Commitment to Reducing Carbon Emissions.’
