Newcastle children head to London for unforgettable day out

Children at Broadwood Primary School have enjoyed a special trip to Westminster

Children at Broadwood Primary School in Newcastle have this week enjoyed a special trip to Westminster, thanks to MP for Newcastle upon Tyne Central and West, Chi Onwurah, and local train operator, Lumo, who worked to create an unforgettable experience for the young people.

The Year 4 class boarded the Lumo train from Newcastle to London King’s Cross with members of teaching staff, ready for an exciting trip to the capital. As a company committed to supporting the communities it serves, Lumo was delighted to offer the children a chance to explore somewhere new and ignite their curiosity.

On arrival in London, the class was given the unique opportunity to visit the Houses of Parliament, receive an exclusive grand tour and a glimpse into what happens daily in the famous building they’ve seen in photos and on TV. The children also saw Buckingham Palace and Trafalgar Square on their journey.

Speaking on the trip, Broadwood Primary School teacher, Malcolm Carr said: “We are extremely grateful to Chi Onwurah MP and Lumo for helping make this trip a reality for our pupils. Enabling children from one of the lowest socio-economic areas in the country to have the opportunity to travel to our capital is amazing. Many of our children, sadly, rarely get the chance to travel to Newcastle city centre let alone London, so this will hopefully give them memories to savour for years to come.”

Martijn Gilbert, Managing Director at Lumo, said: “We were thrilled when we were approached to support Broadwood Primary School on their exciting day out to Westminster. We pride ourselves on supporting our local community, and it’s brilliant to be able to provide opportunities like this for children from Lumo’s home city of Newcastle to get out of the classroom and enjoy new learning experiences. We hope the Broadwood Primary School children had a fantastic day and created lasting memories in London.”

The Westminster trip comes after a visit by Chi Onwurah MP to Lumo’s headquarters in Newcastle city centre, to mark the annual National Apprenticeship Week. Onwurah spent time meeting apprentices from the electric train operator, whilst learning about how Lumo is setting the standard within the rail industry for training the next generation of talent.

The company also helped more than 40 schools across the region deliver special online training on the dangers of trespassing, through partners at Rail Safe Friendly. Broadwood Primary School was one of the many schools to benefit from this support from Lumo.
